The myth of Medusa is well known although there appears to be several versions of this tale. My image is based
on that version where she was a beautifull human priestess of Athene. One day the sea god Poseidon, who desired her, raped
her. As this happened in the temple of the virgin-goddess Athene, she was furious and wanted to punish those who were quilty
of the sacrilege. So she punished Poseidon?... No, she punished her own priestess. Why?... Because she must have seduced Poseidon!
So Athene cursed her. Her hair turned to snakes and her glance would thereafter turn any living thing(men)to stone. So the
Medusa, as we know her, was born. With this picture I wanted to show the helplessness of a small human being in a mercy of
the petty and cruel gods. I also wanted to bring fourth the painful realization of Medusa that she is losing her humanity...
